Our story
Inception
In 2010, Hemkunt Foundation started it’s first project with 3 after-school facilities for children to study English, Mathematics and Information Technology. While running these programs, founder of Hemkunt Foundation, Irinder Singh Ahluwalia decided to work towards providing better employment opportunities for the earning members of the families of the children who were studying there and hence, started a drivers training institute offering training and licensing support.
In 2013, he and his family were stranded for a week at the base of Gurudwara Hemkunt Sahib as they saw nature’s fury unfold in front of them. Buildings and bridges collapsed, cars were engulfed and swept away by the torrents of rain, and helicopters that were tasked for carrying aid were washed away in front of their eyes. They had no food and shelter for a week and their belongings and all provisions were also destroyed.
“Frenzied, panic-stricken and with no glimmer of hope, death seemed inevitable in the moment. My tryst with the fragility of life reaffirmed my purpose. I avowed to give my life to serving humanity.
This incident marked the inception of the Hemkunt Foundation. Since then the Foundation has never looked back, and has only been successful because of its volunteers, who work relentlessly. Without them we are nowhere and we are nothing.”
